Our Story

The Peninsula Rose Society, founded on August 28, 1955, is a nonprofit organization rooted in a deep appreciation for the beauty and culture of roses.

Our mission is to preserve the timeless beauty of roses while embracing new generations of enthusiasts. Through education, exhibitions, and fellowship, we cultivate a welcoming space where tradition blossoms into renewal, ensuring our society thrives for years to come.

The Peninsula Rose Society’s first public rose show—the Spring Annual Rose Show—took place on May 6, 1956, in the Paul Dibert Buick Showroom in Redwood City.

The event was a tremendous success, drawing enthusiastic exhibitors and visitors from across the community. Dr. and Mrs. Persike earned the honor of Queen of the Show, while Mrs. Clay Morgan received top recognition for her outstanding floral arrangement.

On October 8, 1957, the Society moved its meetings from the Chamber of Commerce Building to its current home in the Veterans Memorial Building at 1455 Madison Avenue in Redwood City. Today, the Annual Rose Show is proudly held at the Community Activities Building at 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, continuing a long tradition of celebrating the beauty and diversity of roses.

The strength of the Peninsula Rose Society has always come from the generosity of its members. Their time, energy, and financial support have shaped the Society into the vibrant organization it is today.

Consulting Rosarians have shared their expertise through educational programs, public presentations, and private consultations.

Many members have also volunteered their rose care skills—especially pruning—to assist both public gardens and private individuals. This spirit of service and community is the heart of the Peninsula Rose Society.
