Monthly Meeting

Creating Great Garden & Potting Soils for Maximum Blooms - Presenter Terry Lyngso

After a couple of months off for summer travel and rest, you do not want to miss our September membership meeting. Terry Lyngso will speak about optimizing your soil for rose health and maximizing blooms in the garden. Discussions on soil structure can be simple or complex, and Terry will give us enough information on how to promote good bacteria and fungi which enable plants to perfectly intake water and nutrients. Your soil needs to grow microbial life so nutrients are stored and cycled to plants, water is held and moves through the soil, and plants are healthy.

Many of us garden in containers. Terry will explain the differences between composts, and the other ingredients that are important in making a proper and successful container mix.

Terry will also briefly touch on how Lyngso Garden Materials formulates and lab tests their own soil mixes. Mixes are specialized for what you are growing, and she will explain how to select the right one for your growing conditions and plant types.

Biography

I grew up in Belmont and live in Loma Mar with my husband Joe. I am Board Chair for Lyngso Garden Materials where I have worked since the early 1970’s. Joe and I share a love of nature and native plants. When we moved to Loma Mar we planted natives and encouraged the local natives to find a home in our garden. We love learning about and supporting the birds, bats, insects and invertebrates that are indigenous to the area. We also grow herbs, roses, fruit trees and vegetables in our garden. We compost at home and I even composted commercially 40 years ago. I have been a soil nerd all my life and became a San Mateo/San Francisco Master Gardener in 2009 for the connection to UCANR, continuous learning and to meet people with similar interests. I believe in organic gardening and the power of the microbial community to heal the soil, conserve water and grow healthy plants.
