June 2015 – President’s Message

By Barbara Todd, President

Our 58th Annual Rose Show was another great success. We had many beautiful roses and rose arrangements. Many thanks to all who helped make this a success, including those who helped with set-up and takedown and those who provided raffle roses and monetary donations. A huge thank you to Sandee Kolter, Jerry Georgette (and myself) who cohosted the show this year, and to all the committees who provided support. The rose raffle was a huge hit, with approximately 30 roses raffled off. We received many positive comments from the judges and visitors.

Congratulations to Dave Bang whose “Aloha” rose won Queen of the Show (Best of Show) and to Maxine Hineman who won Best Arrangement of Show with her arrangement “Gypsy.” The Rose Show’s complete results and pictures will be posted here.

We will be having a rose critique meeting that is open to all. It will be held July 19th at Priya Kamath’s house in Portola Valley starting at 11:00 a.m. This is an opportunity to discuss ideas to improve the show, what worked and what did not. Following the Rose Show critique on July 19th, we will have our annual potluck picnic at Priya’s house. Our usual location, at Judy and James Rice’s in Woodside, is not available this year, but we will be returning there in future years. Be sure to mark your calendars for the picnic.

June is Library Month, and the American Rose Society has requested that each local society furnish a weekly bouquet to a library. Carol Wong is in charge of this effort, with PRS volunteers placing a bouquet each week at their local library. Thank you Carol for organizing this project.

Most of my roses have faded, but I have a few stalwarts that are still blooming, including Fame, Pink Promise and Artistry. Enjoy your remaining roses and look forward to the next bloom cycle.

“There was something rather blousy about roses in full bloom, something shallow and raucous, like women with untidy hair.” ― Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca
