American Rose Society news
The American Rose Society (ARS) National Show and Convention was just held at the end of October in San Diego and I will make a report on any news in the November meeting.
Peninsula Rose Society
In PRS news, we have a NEW Consulting Rosarian (CR), Carol Wong in our society. She passed the exam with flying colors (rosy colors?)10/14 at the SF ARS Consulting Rosarian Class. Congratulations Carol! Jerry and I were happy to teach portions of the class.
For anyone wanting to follow in Carol’s footsteps next year, or become a judge, we have new sponsorship/ scholarship for those who travel to and participate in a class. Car Travel, fee for class (and if needed hotel) will be covered to encourage new CRs and Judges to apply. This will not draw down general funds of PRS. Applicants can report expenses after the class for reimbursement.
Please vote (for PRS). All PRS Members can vote in November for this slate of officers for 2019.
Stu Dalton – President
Priya Kamath – Corresponding Secretary & Director
Patti Spezzaferro – VP
Jenny Tsao – Director
Pam Schenk – Treasurer
Judy Webster – Director
Anne Quincy – Recording Secretary
In addition to the officers, there are other non- officer positions. Jerry Georgette is now appointed Consulting Rosarian Coordinator plus he agreed to continue on the Peninsula Rosarian Editor Role. Barbara Todd agreed to be in the Membership Role. Thank you all for agreeing to serve in these capacities.
Other PRS Board News
- The PRS Board decided that since we have not had a show chair step forward, we will have an exhibition/show next year like last. I will help plan and solicit others to help organize and support it. It is slated for Sunday May 5, 2019.
- The idea of incentives to exhibiting roses for our monthly shows was resolved with a trial for 2019 of a separate raffle for rose entries. For a trial, one prize (likely, a gift certificate) for Horticultural entry and one for arrangements will be awarded at the meetings where we have shows (judged or not). 1 ticket will be given to those entering for each horticultural entry and 5 for each arrangement. Two tickets will be drawn in this special raffle. This is just to encourage more color and entries.
- Not associated with the raffle, as before, judged show points will still be added up to determine trophy monthly show winners in December. Plus, we will request a short critique to learn from the judge for judged shows.
Our November Program will combine another the wonderful holiday arrangement ideas she showed us last year with tips on types of arrangements from Karen Flores. This may also inspire you to exhibit arrangements in 2019 and participate in the new raffle I discussed above.
December Pot luck dinner and installation. We will have a dinner and installation of officers December 11 (the second, not the third Tuesday) at 6:30 PM) at the Veterans Memorial Building as we have done in past years.
Happy gardening and Happy (early) Holidays
