January 2021 – President’s Message

By Patti Spezaferro

Wishing you beautiful moments and all the blessings a heart can know for 2021 and always.

As we enter into this new year, I am reminded that it’s a time to celebrate and be thankful for the many wonderful things in my life: good health, a loving family, and my friends at Peninsula Rose Society. Like every organization, the Peninsula Rose Society faced many challenges in 2020 going from in-person meetings to zoom meetings. But what has become crystal clear to me is the power of togetherness. Helen Keller’s quote rings true with PRS  “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

Here are the 2020 Highlights I am grateful for:
Marlene Bollhoffer who even though is unable to attend PRS meetings,  made sure the Ladera gift certificate went to the raffle winner each month.
Jim Crowther for taking orders and delivering fertilizer right to your door and for mailing out the Rosarian to members who are not able to access the internet.
Stuart Dalton and Pam McGraw for creating YouTube Educational Rose Videos starring Stuart Dalton with the help of the talented Pam McGraw who was in charge of filming and editing.
Karen Flores our membership chair for coming up with the idea for creating an interactive Holiday Floral Master Class. Thank you and your team for delivering the floral kit to our members. Everyone who participated absolutely loved it.
Cindy Georgette for launching our Instagram account with 142 followers.
Jerry Georgette for creating an informative and beautifully laid out monthly Rosarian.
Ines Hill for being our gracious Corresponding Secretary and being part of the Calling Tree along with Carol Wong and Debbie Klinger
Tomoko Lee for creating a beautiful Virtual Annual Rose Show with the help of PRS members’ beautiful rose photographs. There were 600 hits on the PRS website in June alone.
Ann Quincy for taking minutes at our meetings and keeping the Board on task.
Pam Schenk for being our outstanding treasurer who diligently balanced our books every month or 23 years.
Jenny Tsao Smith for working on publicity by creating stunning PRS speaker announcement cards.
Judy Webster for booking great speakers like Joe Truskot who spoke on Rose Nutrition.
Carol Wong, Jerry Georgette, and Stuart Dalton for being our outstanding Consulting Rosarians who answered your questions on roses.
Weldon Wong for being our charming raffle man.

The Peninsula Rose Society cannot have been graced with a better Board of Directors team to carry us through this pandemic. Lastly, but not least you the members who have stuck by us through thick and thin during this challenging year of computer glitches, bad internet connections, and poor sound quality.

We have wonderful speakers lined up this year. Our next monthly membership meeting is set for 7:30 pm on Tuesday, January 19th. Consulting Rosarian, Stuart Dalton, will demonstrate winter rose pruning. I will send out the link as the date approaches in my regular monthly email update. If you are free on Thursdays at 2 pm, drop in on our social Zoom meetings. Visit a garden, learn how to care for your roses, catch up with old friends, and make new ones. Thursday, January 7th will feature Prince Charles’ garden at Highgrove. Until then be safe and don’t forget to smell the roses.

Happy gardening,

Patti
