June 2023 – President’s Message

Is your birthday this month?  If it is then the rose is your birth month flower.  How fitting is that when you’re a member of the Peninsula Rose Society? Happy birth month and I hope you are enjoying your roses.

I read that National Rose Month was first observed in 1959 when efforts were made to pass a bill to designate the rose as our nation’s flower.  Arlene Hennessey of Mayonne, New Jersey was crowned Rose Queen in honor of the month that year.

We had a long winter this year and it was difficult, for us humans, dealing with the weather issues, but our roses loved the much-needed deep watering. Now that the warmer weather is upon us, keep those roses hydrated.

Each year the Peninsula Rose Society plays a part in observing and honoring roses by displaying roses at our local libraries.  We have volunteers that will be taking rose bouquets, arrangements, and single roses to our libraries in Redwood City, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, and Atherton.  If you would like to display a rose or roses, at your local library, please get in touch with me and I will give you more information.  Our libraries are aware that “June is Rose Month at the Library”, and they always enjoy having our roses displayed.

We are in the planning stages of our July picnic. So please save the date to get together on Sunday, July 23rd. I will send more information to all of you soon.

In closing, I hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful weather we have right now.  It’s perfect for roses and perfect for us.  I look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Judy Webster
